Ghostly Shinty at Dalarossie
At Dalarossie near Inverness there is a kirk that is believed to be haunted. One particular haunting is said to occur on the 25th December, Christmas Day. The story goes that one Christmas Day many years ago, that just so happened to fall on a Sunday, the local families of the Shaws of Strathnairn and Mackintosh of Strathdearn, decided to take to the field to play a game of Shinty. However, whilst it was not a sin to play shinty of Christmas Day, it was to play shinty on the Sabbath. The Mackintoshes thought better of the idea and did not turn up to the Kirk for the game, but the Shaws did turn up the Kirk Glebe of Dalarossie. And they had a wonderful time! But, that next year all of the players who turned up that day are said to have died. In penance for their sins, it is reported that when Christmas Day falls on a Sunday…the spirits of the Shaws return to the Kirk for a festive game of shinty!
